Because even counsellors need care.
Supervision
What Is Meant By Supervision?
Supervision is a time in which a counsellor can meet with another, typically more experienced, colleague and reflect on some of the sessions that they have had with their own clients. During this time, the pair will discuss how the less experienced counsellor is doing, both professionally and personally.
My Approach To Supervision
I approach supervision with the same warmth and relaxed demeanour as I do counselling but I also make sure that the analytical element that supervision naturally demands is always present. Through supervision you will be able to reflect on previous sessions with your own clients in order to gain a level of both awareness and clarity that often is only available with hindsight.
Models For Supervison
During supervision I aim to follow the guidance of two well known supervisory models. The first is Hawkins’ CLEAR coaching model which is able to be applied to most positions of guidance/coaching and the other, Proctor’s Three-Functions model, highlights points that are more specific to counselling supervision.
If you decide that I am the supervisor for you, our first session will always start off with an initial consultation. In this, we will discuss our working agreement and the best way to move forward together.
Once we have decided how to go forward, we will often start by discussing if you have felt like any of your clients issues have started to have had an effect on you.
If nothing is brought up straight away, we will go through and reflect on some of your sessions in greater depth. We will critically analyse these sessions, making sure that you are practicing in the expected professional manner by being as empathetic as possible whilst also remaining unbiased.
Something I endevour to ensure is that every service I provide is as inclusive as possible.
I am a LGBTQIA+ ally and committed to queer power and liberation.
For those that would prefer working face-to-face, the supervision room can be made accessible with the use of a mobile ramp.
Sometimes things get in the way of being able to make it to the arranged appointment which is why I try to offer flexible appointment times.
I do not believe that I am an expert in your situation, but I hold your best interests at the centre of my work.
